Dr. Gaske is currently Executive Director of High Road Academy in Howard County, Maryland. High Road Academy is a nonpublic program for students with learning disabilities in grades 4-12. Dr. Gaske opened the program in 1998. The school has grown over the past six years to include both an upper (9-12) and lower (4-8) school programs. The student population at High Road is comprised of students from Howard, Montgomery, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Calvert, & Carroll Counties as well as the District of Columbia.
While High Road does provide a comprehensive program for students with learning disabilities primarily, the singular biggest reason most students attend High Road is due to severe reading and written language deficits. Teaching methodologies and strategies at High Road are geared specifically to this population.
A graduate of the University of Maryland, Dr. Gaske received her undergraduate degree in 1975 with dual certification in special and general education. Dr. Gaske began her special education teaching career working for the Howard County Public School System. Dr. Gaske continued her professional career with HCPS as a Special Education Teacher, Resource Teacher for the Office of Special Education, and later as a Supervisor of Special Education (grades K-12).
Over the course of her career, Dr. Gaske received Master’s Degrees in Communicative Disorders, Reading, and Administration & Supervision from the Johns Hopkins University. She received her Doctor of Education Degree in Special Education, with an emphasis on Learning Disabilities, in 1991, also from JHU.
While working for the Howard County Public Schools, Dr. Gaske conducted extensive training in Reading for both general and special education teachers. Dr. Gaske has also taught courses for JHU in the areas of Reading and Written Language Disorders.
Over the past eleven years at High Road Academy, Dr. Gaske has worked extensively to build one of the most successful programs for students with learning disabilities in the state of Maryland. The goal of the program is to return students to less restrictive environments to the greatest extent possible. Due to the significant improvement in academic performance, approximately 30% of the total student population at High Road successfully reintegrate into regular schools each year by making either full or partial transitions to less restrictive settings.
