Returning To A Less Restrictive Environment (LRE)
Although a return to a less restrictive environment may not be appropriate for all students, there are a significant number of students attending High Road Academy for whom this is a reachable goal!
Each year, approximately 35% of our students return to full or partial days in less restrictive settings. Having closed the academic gap, stepping back into a more appropriate, challenging setting further improves a student’s sense of self- confidence.
The Annual Review meeting provides an opportunity to review progress yearly and analyze a student’s strengths and needs relative to functioning in a general education setting. A decision to pursue placement in a less restrictive setting is not one-sided. High Road Academy staff, local school system case managers, parents, and students all participate in this process. Typically, a representative from the home school attends the Annual Review meeting and participates in discussions regarding types of classes and supports needed for a successful return. Each student differs in the types of accommodations that may be needed. So, careful planning typically begins well in advance of a return.
After making the transition, High Road continues to monitor progress for a full year. Report card data is gathered each quarter for students making full transitions to home schools. Currently, transitioned students (2002-2003) earned, on average, a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.85. This nearly “B” average is excellent. Many students have made Honor Roll. These results are typical from year to year.
This year, High Road Academy staff completed an “Exit Plan” for each student. The purpose of this plan is to better define the conditions under which discussion about a return to LRE might be appropriate. Although the student’s IEP continues to be the focus of yearly progress, the Exit Plan is designed as an overall vision of where the student needs to be in order to meet the challenges of regular school.
